hospitality and comfortAbout the Center

The Gathering Center located in Stetson, Maine, is an autonomous retreat center with programs directed towards experiential events of spiritual, evolutionary, 21st century practices in a community seeking to grow and expand their limits. Retreats have been held on this land for more than twenty years.

The Center, located on a secluded 40-acre former farm property, also hosts concerts, films, family reunions, and special projects. The property has four permanent structures: the Gathering Center, the Manor House, the Apartment, and the Pop House Cottage. A seasonal structure and a portable structure are also available for special occasions.

Located in a valley only nine miles from Interstate 95, but on the opposite side of a ridge, the Center will place you back in nature’s quieter realms where you might be able to feel the stars in the night sky now freed from the reflection of city lights. Walk mowed paths on 25 acres of natural field being watchful of the wild turkeys, deer, and other animals as they search out their daily food. Or sit beside the babbling stream that meanders across the property and just be.

The Gathering Center, which is handicapped accessible, is twenty miles from Bangor International Airport and pickup can be arranged, if requested.

The Manor House has a small bedroom, a large multi-person bedroom, library shelves, and a bath located on the walk-out first floor level. Stairs lead to the second level and the kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom, quiet room, and access to the new bedrooms and dormitory space.  There are multiple toilets and showers available in the Gathering Center as well to accommodate large groups.

An upstairs Apartment is available seasonally from October thru May, but it is not handicapped accessible at this time.  There is one bedroom, a loft bedroom space with low ceiling clearance (used often for meditation), and a non-winterized porch which has been used many times as a third bedroom (depending upon season).  A small bathroom with toilet and sink are available, and a separate shower location, along with an open plan kitchen/eating area/living room.

The Pop House is a cottage we built in 2009 for Georgia’s father. It is now used as a guest cottage, artist residence, individual retreat space, and retreat leader housing. It is compact and quiet and fully furnished with a full kitchen, bedroom, bath, living room, and guest space. The interior finish is all natural wood with natural sea grass carpeting. Since it was built for a man in his 90s, it is handicapped accessible from the front deck. That deck is only 18 inches above grade and could be made accessible easily.

Most retreat groups provide and prepare their desired meal options by bringing food, locating a cook, or sharing the meal chores among retreatants. Dennis and Georgia will assist in locating someone who can provide support if needed.  Most retreat planners ask participants to bring their own breakfast foods which can be prepared in the Manor House which has a full kitchen with stove, refrigerator, plus dishes and utensils. A coffee pot and tea pot are available in both the Manor House and the Gathering Center. Clean up after meals is a shared responsibility of the attendees.  All necessary appliances, utensils, dishes, and pots and pans are readily available for use by retreat participants.

Costs will vary depending on the number of persons attending a retreat, the meal options chosen, and whether the retreat presenter(s) include the costs for room and board in their program costs. Specific costs will be listed in the description for each retreat in the information for that retreat. A limited amount of scholarship funding is available to assist those who could not otherwise attend. A limited number of work for room and board costs may also be available. See the description of a particular program for details.
